How to create beachy mosaics using summer collection templates
Not that long ago, a new fabric design business put out an art call requesting summer inspired designs. It sounded intriguing. It also sounded like a great way to get my drawing skills into gear and create some artwork. I brainstormed ideas that would capture the vibrant energy and warmth of the season. My intention was to create a collection that was playful with all the feel-good vibes of summer. It was also in the back of mind to create drawings that could be turned into mosaic summer collection templates…
Using your mosaic summer collection templates
Each design in the summer collection started life as a drawing. Some were inspired by the finds in my son’s room (guitar, thongs, beach shorts, cap). Others were from shells found at the beach and photos of birds flying. There were memories of beach items (surfboards, umbrella, ice cream).
Several of the drawings were also turned into water colours to follow the art call requirements.
Like the afternoon tea collection, I was quite happy with the final motif drawings. I thought they would be perfect for mosaic summer collection templates.
How to use the mosaic summer collection template designs
When using the mosaic summer collection templates, there is the option to create the summer themed items. These can be surfboards, shells, pelican, or stars that can be as small or large as you like by:
- Expanding the design into a larger piece with multiple summer inspired templates to create your own unique design.
- Creating your mosaic on a small tile or frame, making it a quick project.
- Framing your chosen summer design mosaic to hang in a kitchen or dining room as feature wall piece.
- Using the final product as a decorative tile on a table, backsplash, or coaster.
There are several options for using the mosaic templates:
- Free hand drawing – draw the design free hand directly onto the mosaic surface. If desired, use your creative license to adjust to your individual style.
- Print and cut design – place the cut out design on the mosaic surface and draw around design lines. Increase or decrease design size by adding or removing the desired size (cm, mm, inches) evenly on each element.
- Print and place – using the printed design, place it directly under the mosaic substrate (glass, picture frame, mesh) and apply mosaic materials.
Playing with the designs
What started out as a small idea, eventually produced many different designs! The final surface pattern design collection ended up being quite comprehensive, with lots of variations for motif placement. Some were simple, while others were more complex.
Creating the templates for the summer design collection has meant there are lots of choices for simple mosaics. These include stars, surfboards, ice cream and beach towels.
There are options for those looking for a challenge and the desire to work with more intricate mosaics. You could try the rowboat and oars, guitar, or maybe the combi van. There are no hard and fast rules to say you must use all template elements in your mosaic. It is okay to leave some design elements out!
The variety of template designs provides more choices to mix and match. You could include place the birds with the palm trees. Why not try the guitars with the thongs, like the final surface pattern design collection?
Have fun with mosaic summer collection templates and see what you can create!
